A New Opportunity to Minister in the Community

Founded in 1840 with a purpose of ministering to the community in the center of the town, Norwich Central has visited that purpose on a number of occasions during the last 150 years – and as recently as the 1970’s voted to stay in the center of the city to provide a place of spirituality, outreach and assistance to members of the community.

Norwich, as many communities today, has a large population of homeless and others in need. Certainly today’s economic situation has further exacerbated this condition. Members of the church learned that the local soup kitchen closes every Saturday after lunch and doesn’t reopen until breakfast on Monday. Area churches have joined together to provide a meal Sunday afternoon but, there are no meals offered between lunch Saturday and the mid-afternoon lunch on Sunday.

Until April 2011 . . .

Beginning in early April of this year, Central Baptist began offering free breakfast to anyone in need. Working with the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen to “get the word out” volunteers opened church doors at 9:00 that first Sunday ready to serve pre-prepared breakfast sandwiches, fresh fruit, coffee, juice, toast and a warm heart to whoever showed. Eight people took part in the first breakfast meal.

Since that time, more than ten months have passed and more than 2000 meals have been served. Our menu has grown to provide balanced nutrition and typically includes: scrambled egg bake which includes eggs, cheese and sausage; egg and cheese sandwiches; hash brown potato patties; baked oatmeal; fresh fruits; juices; and breads for toasting. We have also been able to provide some articles of clothing.

Our church members have found a variety of ways to be involved from providing food products to providing monetary support, from preparing and serving food to visiting with our guests. Through this outreach, Norwich Central has once again shown conviction to own its downtown-ness.

How to become involved

Stormy Weather

Please note that much of Central’s parking is on-street, so if we have a winter weather event, with a parking ban in Norwich, chances are that our church activities will have to be canceled. Check our website if you have any questions, or watch WFSB or NBC CT News, or listen to WICH, WCTY, WNLC, or WKNL radio.

Mid-Week Lenten Services

Join our sister Norwich churches for a 6-week series of Lenten services. Held each Wednesday during Lent, at 7 PM, the series this year will explore the last week of Jesus’ earthly ministry.
